We are thrilled to share an exciting development that marks a significant milestone for Nuphoton Technologies. Our commitment to innovation and excellence has recently been showcased in a groundbreaking mission that has captivated the world’s attention.
For the first time in over half a century, new NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations have successfully operated on the Moon, thanks to the first triumphant delivery under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 mission lunar lander named Odysseus, completed a seven-day journey to lunar orbit and softly landed near Malapert A in the South Pole region of the Moon on February 22.
Odysseus carried six NASA science research and technology demonstrations, among other customer payloads, all of which completed transit checkouts en route to the Moon. A NASA precision landing technology demonstration provided assistance to ensure a landing. This mission is part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, aiming to send astronauts to search for water and other lunar resources later this decade.
We are proud to announce that a key component of this mission’s success was the inclusion of Nuphoton’s amplifier in the Doppler Navigation Lidar system developed by NASA. This system played a role in aiding the successful landing by providing precise altitude, speed, and direction to the guidance, navigation, and control subsystems. The Navigation Doppler Lidar (NDL), originally developed at NASA’s Langley Research Center, uses a laser to measure altitude with exceptional accuracy and relies on the Doppler effect to determine direction and speed.
